I'm having trouble taking the ends off the fuel filter. There are 2 clips which snap on the filter itself, but the after that, the hoses going in won't come out. I tried pulling real hard and they won't budge. is there somthing I'm missing here.
Thanks
Mike
If the clips are out then your not pulling hard enough. You don't need a fuel line disconnect tool for the fuel filter. Just be ready for a gush of fuel (i.e. don't be under it and turn away). Grab the ends and pull harder!
Hey, I have a 96 Bronco and I don't see any clips for the tool to depress. I bought the tool at Napa.
If I pull any harder, I'm gonna break something.
Any help?
Up to around '91 no special tools are required. There's just a hairpin clip at each connection which pops out easily and the lines pull off. '92ish+ use many "fingers" internal to the fitting which slip over a lip on the filter and grab. You need a special tool for this to disengage these fingers as you can't really reach them, and even if you could you couldn't disengage them all at once. Look at how your parking brake cables engage in the rear frame bracket - same principle.
I bought a Fram filter too and it didn't include any tool.
Anyone got a link to the tool I need (96 Bronco)?
The one I got from Napa is like a two sided scissor with two sets of round indentions to fit different diameters of connectors. I can't see anything in the lines to depress and the tool isn't helping.
I don't get it, I upgrade to a newer Bronco and the fuel filter is hard to get off but the single belt is a breeze.
I'm not *certain* about '96 but I think they might even be considered a/c line disconnect tools. I know Checker sells a pack of 4 (different sizes) for cheap. They should be round, plastic, and have a slit in them so they can spread open to go over the line (and I think they're usually different colors). Once in place you just slide it forward toward the fitting and it'll pretty much do the rest.
tool we used on our 96 bronco 5.0 is like this one (which is diff on another 96 5.8 i saw my pal work on last year, maybe mine was diff. because we bought the bronco in may 96?):

Look here for a diy on the filter replacement by Fordman (clap...clap for Fordman!).
Hey thanks! It's like fuel filters for dummies!
I think I was expecting the tool to catch something or push a catch out of the way, not to depress a spring loaded device. I'm sure I'll get it now. Whatever happened to simple hose clamps?
