Smile I6 oil amount

hi i have a 86 4.7L I6 f150 & the first & the last time (3000 mi ago) i changed my filters & oil i spent about an hour and a half just adding & checking the oil to get it to show on the stick & i dont recall how much oil i put in it...i think i put in 6quarts but im not sure can someone tell me how much i should put in so i dont have to waste so much time on the oil change this time???

---also when i slow down and i get to about 5mph i hear a rather loud CLICK/clank everynow & then.. is that ok or "normal" for an old truck?

A loud noise is never normal for any vehicle no matter how old it is. It could be anything though. You need to try to relate it more to what's going on like;

It does it always when you slow down. Is it always after you use the brakes, or will it do it when you just let it coast down?

It does it automatically or it only does it as you start to hit the gas to speed back up?

I am not sure about the oil, I could look it up in a book but sometimes I don't trust the book. Someone with a six will know, or what you could do is just fill it up with 5 quarts and then run it. I know it takes at least 5 quarts. After you run it and let the oil settle, then if its on the add mark, then add one quart, and you know it takes 6.

I have 2 4.9 I-6's. I put in 5 quarts plus 1 bottle of duralube high mileage treatment. It can depend on the oil pan. If someone installed a deeper pan it would be 6 quarts. Factory would be 5 quarts. I would follow Franklin2's suggestion.

I had an '84 with the stock 300 six. I always added 6 quarts, along with the new filter. It put the level about 1/6" ABOVE the full mark. Ran it over 450K this way.

Oil quantity does depend on the pan (and even the dipstick), but most 80-96 300's use 6-7 qts on an oil change depnding on the filter you use. Using the full size filter the 300 I had held a full seven quarts.

BUT, the oil pan on my truck doesn't match the block. I have an in-block and an in-pan dipstick, and they disagree by a full quart. The in-pan stick needs 7 quarts to read full, the block stick needs 6 quarts to read full.

As for the noise, check your driveshaft u-joints and your transmission mount. They make clunks like you describe.

I would check the rearend and the springs to make sure everything is tight. I would also take the rear brake drums apart to make sure everything is kosher there too.
