i have a 94 f150 302 4x4 with 35's it has been pulling my small race car trailers very well. i now purchased an enclosed trailer and while pulling home with a new car it now bogged down and i have to get a rebuilt tranny, and am thinking of putting 4.10's in the rear? is this ok?
You should check to see what gear ratios are already in your truck, and then decide from there. You may already have 4.10s or something close and choose to go even lower. Also, if you're only changing the rear ratio, be sure to never use 4 wheel drive in terrain where the tires do not spin enough to make up for the difference in gears between the front and rear axles...your front tires will need to be moving faster than the rears if you lower the rear gear ratio.
Good advice from skinsfan, but I think he needs to advise you to just change the gears in both front, and rear diffs. Too many problems associated with different front and rear ratios, and the whole remembering thing.
Those 35" tires may like a 4.56:1 ratio over the 4.10:1. Knowing what you have now is the best place to start. The 4.56 should buz the engine about 2400 rpm at highway speeds without the trailer. The trans, and the truck will be much happier with lower gears when you are towing that trailer.
If you don't appreciate how much wind resistance that new enclosed trailer has, try running down the driveway with a full sheet of plywood upright. The truck is working pretty hard to overcome the added weight, and wind resistance.
