I just bought a 78 f150 4x4 351M C6 Its got the NP203 full time transfer case with the part time kit installed. I'm planning on changing the fluid very soon and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of fluid to put back in and how much does it take to fill it back up. Thanks in advance....
10w-40 should be used. Most people damage the 203 by running gear oil (90wt) or trans fluid (18wt), and this brings an end to 203's in a hurry. You will also want to lock the hubs once in a while (10 miles per 200 driven recommended), to lubricate everything. Once the parts time kit is installed, the chain no longer turns, it is this chain that helps to lube everything, and needs to be turned once in a while. All you have to do is lock the hubs once in a while, and that thing will last a very long time.
Either one will do, as long as you do not do both. Do not lock the hubs, and put it in 4wd. Since there is no longer a differential in the case, it will bind, and big problems will result. The chain will spin with the case in 2wd and the hubs locked, or with the hubs unlocked, and the case in 4wd. Your choice, he results are the same.
I'm having a shop change my transfer case fluid, and I told the guy I wanted 10W40 in there. After reading that post Im getting paranoid like maybe I should call up there and STRESS to put motor oil, not tranny fluid or gear oil in it. Is that common knowledge or should I call and bother the poor guy again??
Thanks for the advice and the only time it will get put in 4hi w/ the hubs LOCKED is when im going muddin or we get some snow, correct??.....Billy
Yeah 4 hi, or 4lo for off-highway adventures. The truck will hop around, and be difficult to steer if you try it on pavement. The bind on the transfer case is not good on it.
I dont know about common knowledge, and everyone knowing that the 203 case takes good old fashioned engine oil. May wanna be safe, and double check. If you run gear oil, it will take a while for it to go bad, but it is recommended to use 10W-40.
I could go into much detail about why it is importnat to use the right oil, but it is a long and boring story, and the end has already been disclosed.
Good luck with your ride, and happy truckin......
