Shudder

I have an 03 F-150 4x4. I've noticed in the last couple weeks that from a dead stop when I take off and turn a corner i can feel a slight shudder or shake feeling. I'm wondering if this might be worn clutches in the limited slip. Also i'm wondering if anyone other than trans-go makes a shift kit for this truck.

I have the same issue with mine ('02 F150 5.4 FX4) and replaced the rear diff fluid + friction modifier (4 oz. added) yesterday. It looks like a number of people have had the problem remedied with the fluid/modifier change.

My question to anyone who has done this is, how long does it take for the new fluid to fix the chatter? I've heard that it takes 100 miles, 200 miles, "X" heating cycles, etc., etc. I've gone 30 mi since yesterday and it seems a lot better, but still rumbles a little on some corners and in reverse (while parking). Anyone know how long I should wait before it's apparent that the new fluid won't do it, and the clutch packs need replacing?

I had the same issue with my 2001 4R70W after the dealer serviced it. i went back and they added another 4oz of FM (total of 8oz) and it was remedied immediately.

with the limited slip diffs, you are to add 4 oz of friction modifier, available at your dealer, Amsoil, etc.

it worked for me and should for you if you don't have any mechanical issues.

I had the same problem and after I added the 4oz of additive the problem went away and stayed away for about 6 months ab=nd now it's back and only now when I tow my trailer it s sounds like the rear end is going to fall out of the truck.I don't know what it cost to repair the rear end. I might be buy a new truck instead. I like my truck but I had to replace the transmission at 68000 miles and now at 110,000 it looks like I need to have the rear end rebuilt. Maybe I'll look at a different brand next time.

Is there a fill hole to add this?
Forgive my "ignance" but I've never touched a rear end...on a truck....or a man....

Thanks

I assume adding the 4oz won't take me over the full line?

On my '02 the filler hole for the rear diff is on the driver's side of the front of the housing... it's a plug with a 3/8" square drive. Depending on how full it's filled, the oil level may be just a little below the filler plug or just even with it. If I recall, the manual says to fill to 1/4" below the fill plug, so there may or may not be space for the 4 oz. of FM.

had the same problem in my 01 supercrew. changed the fluids and added the friction modifier, unfortunately it didn't cure the problem. had to change the clutch packs, about $ 740.00 cdn.

Was the $740.00 cdn figure for just the parts or did you have a shop do it? (I don't think the fluid change fixed it in mine, either...)

That's not good.
Same problem here, 2001 SuperCrew 4x4.
Shudder started last Spring while pulling trailer.
I dumped the fluid and added the additive for the limited slip...didn't help or even make a difference, mine only does it once in a while...
hope it's not the clutch packs, does it make a difference if I just let it go?
I don't really need or use the limited slip feature anyway.

I put in Mobile1 Full Synthetic gear oil 75W140 and 8oz of Motorcraft FM. It still chattered so I found a piece of unused parking lot and spent 30 minutes doing tight figure 8's riding the brakes with throttle and worked the s##t out of the clutches. The tranny temp went to 200 but the LS smoothed out and has been fine for 2 years. I figured the previous constant chatter might have caused a wear pattern on the clutches so I made them slip until they wore off the pattern. I know it still works because one wheel on sand the other on ac and they both spin.
