86 did not have a 400. If yours does, you have lots of little doo-dads on your truck that do nothing, since it was all mostly for the fuel injection, which I am assuming you do not have anymore.

I'm not familiar with the style of sensor that mounts in the cable, but if you're completely stuck you can buy the VSS that mounts on the transmission that was used on the 87-91 trucks with cruise control. It requires a different speedo cable, and a different plug (pigtail) but they're all readily available from the autoparts stores.

D4AZ-9E731-B .. Speed Control Sensor - Use with factory installed Speed Control & TWO Speedometer Cables / Marked: D4AF-BA (Motorcraft DY-145) / Obsolete

1975/79 F100/350 & Econoline / 1978/79 Bronco / 1980/89 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline // 1974/76 Thunderbird/Continental Mark IV / 1979/82Mustang/Capri/Fairmont/Zephyr.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

There is another used with ONE speedometer cable, but not until 1984.
