I just got a new horse trailer, 9K unloaded and drove it home, about 150 miles. At first, even though I was going 70, and just at 2000 RPMs, it seemed to be at the max it could do. After about 100 miles, it then seemed I had more pedal. Is this normal? Does the truck recalibrate itself or something?
I just got back from a 3 hour drive hauling my 1800 lb trailer. I probably had 500 lbs in it so a total of 2300 lbs.
Granted I was on pretty level highway, but I had a couple of times where I was at 75 to 80 (@2250-2500 RPM) and had to get on it to navigate around trucks and it jumped up to 95 without any strain and never broke 3K RPM.
That doesn't sound right. I pull my 28 footer,it's about 8K and my 04 psd does it easily. I'm turning about 2000 rpm's @ 115kph and have lots of pedal left to pass when I want. Uphill, downhill, flat...it doesn't matter. Mine's all stock. I wonder if your turbo's got some problems.
Do issues before I pulled, but it sounds like I should take it in and get it checked.
Going up a hill, I had no pedal left. It never got passed 2800 RPMS, but it was in tow haul mode, which shouldn't make a difference, right?
Sounds like there is definately a problem. Your engine is working way too hard when it shouldn't be. In tow/haul your transmission shouldn't be down shifting like it is. The only time my psd sees 2800 rpm is when I'm leaving someone behind.
When I had my '03, it fell on it's face only when towing, similar to your situation and it had a turbo problem. I pull an 11k travel trailer with my truck and it pulls like a mule. it'll do 70 up a hill no problem and still accelerate by just tipping in a little throttle and spooling the turbo up. Get her checked out.
