I was told an 02 F350 cc, drw, 4x4, lb, auto, 4.10 rear, had a tow rating of 12,500#, conventional hitch. Is that correct? And what is the rating for the same truck with a 3.73 rear? I have to tow a trailer that is 12k. Thanks for any help.
the truck and engine will do it, But, you better check your reciever hitch to see what its rated for ( I bet its only 10K). You said "conventional", for this case does that meanb weight distributing? I dont think I would put more than 6-8K without a weight distributing hitch head.
The hitch is class 5 but not weight distributing. According to the Draw tite site their class 5 is good for 12k. With WD it is good for 14k.
are you talking about the reciever or the drawbar? if the reciver is class 5 and its rated for 14k W/D then go to your local RV dealer and buy this http://www.drawtite-hitches.com/WD/dt_tow_beast.html and you will be good to go.
I probably have a draw bar around for 12k. I was concerned about the rating of the trucks. Is 12,500# right for the 4.10 rear, and how much does it change for the 3.73? I don't want to toast the trans. I know the newer trucks with the 6.0 are rated for 15,000#.
According to this link your looking at about 11,500. I don't think the rating will change from 4.10 to 3.73, however your frame length and weather its 4X4 will.
Your already on the right track with finding the correct rated drawbar and ball combo. As far as the tranny goes, slow and easy. Plus, with that much weight keep it out of OD unless your on long straight-aways (this will keep the tranny from hunting for gears when you hit a hill). Hope this helps.
deffinately be carful with the tranny especially with power upgrades!!! I cooked mine pulling big hills out of Scranton back in the spring of 06!! Ford makes one heck of a truck but for all practical purposes there tranny's SUCK!! We went with a ATS Extreme duty tranny with there five stare torque lock converter and co-pilot coltroller. No worries now!!

Sorry, bit of a dumb@** here, but why? So long as you are not heavy footing it, does the trany load change? I keep reading that you want to watch the trans temp as well as the exhaust. Is it because we are expected to step on the pedal a little harder because of the chip? Or is there an actuall change by adding a chip?
I guess I am really leary of the tranny issues because we have had soo many problems with it! I headed out down the road last April and all of the sudden the tranny would not shift out of 3 gear and the OD light was flashing at me!! Had a Banks transcommand in at the time and the problem was that the filter was 100% blocked!! However our mechanic saw NO reason that this tranny shouldn't be able give us another 20-30 thousand miles!! 150 miles down the road I am parked at a Luves fuel station with a blown up tranny!!! Not cool when we are that far from home with a fully loaded horse trailer. Was gunna just do an OEM replacement but Ford's warrenty was a "12 month 12,000 miles" warrenty unless you where towing or plowing and it was a 31 day warrenty!! I see Ford really went all out with tranny durability!!!! NOT!!! But the best advise is to not even put that overdrive in when you haul!!! So there was my nightmare story!!! But yes you deffinately want to watch the EGT's and Trans temp guages The temp on the Tranny will usually tell you that something is wrong or will be going wrong. I start to get nervious when my tranny temp gets past 200 degrees. And as far as a change with the chip YES!! I would assume as mine is alot like other chips that as you ad power you ad fuel!! More fuel means hotter EGT's

Just to be clear, the tranny thing, just watch it period, chip/no chip. The EGT's you want to watch because of a overheat, or signs to a potental melt down? I presently am running a hypertech 3, per the notes i can set this a 100 hp ( stage 3 ) and leave it. But I am very skeptical, so, here I am asking.
If you where never to haul anything at that setting I would say that you would be fine, but to haul with that mutch extra HP on a stock tranny--- that is how I cooked my first one!!! As you could probably tell--- I do not trust those automatic tranny's very well. My ATS tranny has 150,000 mile warrenty and is guarenteed up to 500 HP no matter what you do with it.
That just blows me away, I figured with that motor/trans configuration, I would have been able to handle the extra 100, you figure that is only 315hp. I also know, that all of the other prgrammers and chip options, they tell you to reduce to the 80 hp when towing.
What was the price of the ATS, and from where? Not that I am looking to do any swaping before my time, and would a latger oil pan do any good?

I am running 90Hp extra on the stock tranny w/ 230K, and tow 11.5K# fiver regularly, and spent 5 months in LA. after hurricanes towing 6-8k TT daily with no problems. Maintenance,Maintenance, Maintenance.
