New ignition question.

I had a question about ignition earlier, it was answered well. As I was wandering through the internet and it's infinite wisdom, it suddenly dawned on me. I did not realize I had a point style distributor. I had set the gap on my autolite plugs to .044 because I was told so. I noticed that there are threads regarding HEI upgrades and the new gap size of the plugs. Does that mean that I may have mine gapped way to far? Should they be gapped a little smaller. If so that may explain the running rich issue right. While I am here. Does that mean I should get a different Cap and Rotor? I have no funds to go buy a new HEI or pertronix upgrade. I will have to deal with the points for now.

Oh yeah it is a 351w. I was told it came out of a 79 E100. But the guy7s here say that comes with the non point system. But, after knowing what I am looking at, I do have a point system inside my 72 f100.

I think your gap is too wide. IIRC the gap should be .035 for a points distributor.

The cap and rotor should be ok.

would it change my timing. In turn change how the fuel is burnt. Thus producing that rich running smell of fuel or exhaust. I don't know, that is why I ask.

the plug gap wont change the timing
the point gap will but only a degree or 2
if it is that noticable then it almost must be
the carb
its evident that the po kept the original dist when changing
the engine
when you are ready to upgrade the ignition look
into using a ds2 system
easy and cheap

Duraspark II. It is the 70's and early 80's Ford electronic ignition with the brain box on the fenderwell.
