Never done this...!!!

OK, so I'm gonna attempt to change the intake manifold gaskets on my '84 XLT, since they are suspect in a coolant leak.

I was reading the Haynes shop manual and it says to get an engine hoist (or a friend) to help lift up the manifold once I have all the bolts removed. Is it THAT heavy? I can't imagine it being that bad.

A little help please...

thanks...

It's not that heavy! It will probably be stuck down pretty well, though, and require a little prying to pop up. Once you've got the seal broken, you should be able to lift it out yourself.

It's not heavy but it is awkward. Taking it out by yourself shouldn't be a problem but setting it back in straight without a gasket slipping might be another story. It's easier with two.

The prior posts are correct, however, you may have a factor leaning in your favor. I believe in an earlier post you mentioned that you have an Edelbrock carb (4 bbl., I'm assuming). Do you have a factory cast iron intake for the 4 bbl. (from an older engine..... the '80's truck 302's, to my knowledge, had 2 bbl.'s from the factory.)? I'd be willing to bet that you have an aftermarket aluminum intake (Edelbrock, or otherwise), which will be considerably lighter weight. You still may have a problem popping it loose, and you'll still want to consider having a friend help line it up when reinstalling, but yours will probably be easier to handle. Good luck!

That's right, Mr. Restorit! I've got an Edelbrock aluminum intake. Nonetheless, I decided to just check the snugness of the bolts. So far, it all seems to be working to stop the leaking. Someone told me I should go back to this engine after a few thousand miles and check the tightness of all the bolts. I had over looked the Intake Manifold. So, all is well.

Thanks for all your help, all of you.
