I've had to take the upper intake off the 300's I've done.
I'd recommend either a Fel-pro or Ford gasket. The first one I did I tried a cheap gasket and fought it for hours. Come to find out the gasket (one-piece rubber) was slightly too long and never would have worked anyway. Fel-pro comes with installation pegs that screw into the block to line everything up. Those alone are worth more than anything.
Is it possible to take the oil pan off the inline 6 without jacking the motor up? I have a 1996 F-150 and need a new oil pan gasket REALLY SOON. Other than planning to replacing pickup screen and pressure pump based of you guys suggestions, what else can I expect?

If you plan on putting a new oil pan on then the engine does need to be jacked up. The oil pan is very long and needs the extra clearance to get past the transmission. If your just going to put a new oil pan gasket, pump and pickup screen then just dropping the pan without jacking the engine will be fine.
i just did mine monday. had to jack the motor up and the tranny. probably could have wrestled with it and not raised the tranny, but doing that made it go faster. definately get the one piece with the locating pins. it was almost $25 but worth it for the pegs, they held the gasket, pan, and metal braces in place while i put in the bolts. i drained, dropped and replaced everything in 3hrs.
well, i had a protective layer of oil covering the bottom of my motor, and found out the motor mount bolts were not completely tight . i also had my dad do the cleaning of all the flakey crud on and in the pan while i prepped and installed the new pump and screen. and while we don't have to salt our roads, i do live down here on the gulf with all the salt air.
I got around to changing the oil pan seal on my inline 6 and I did not need to raise the motor. Just unbolted the pan and took out the seal, but had to work around the oil pump on the inside, but got it. THe hardest part about it was putting the pan back up and making the seal stay up at where the main seal would be. Once I got that, it was all downhill and learned alot from it in case this situaton would happen again. Also put on a K&N filter and it was an improvement overall that I liked.
It should. Just remember however, once you lower the pan, it's a touch and feel to work the gasket around the oil pump. It's not hard, you just have to lower the gasket on the inside to bypass it and vice versa to put it back on. I start with the back end of the pan and seal to replace it since that is where the skinnest part of the gasket is. It can be tricky, but if you take your time, it isn't bad.
