The body of my truck looks great for a 95 Bronco with 110,000 hard earned NY state miles on it. However the underside is all rusty. Everything still looks strong, but the surface rust is driving me nuts. Is there anything I can spray on to at least hide the rust and prevent it from growing too fast?
IMO, rust is like cancer. Unless removed, it will continue to spread.
If it were me, I would take a wire wheel to the very rough areas, then lightly coat the bottom of it from time to time w/ a silicone lubricant. (you'll probably notice that the areas near an oil leak, if you have any, aren't rusty) Be careful not to get any on your rotors or tires. Keep it inspected and cleaned.
There are some problem areas that others have mentioned on this site, under fender wells and such, that trap dirt and debris. This should be checked, too.
OIL We get our vehicles oiled 2x a year here in VT and there is no rust underneath. The police dept, fire, dam near everyone who wants to keep a vehicle alive does it here. I'm not sure if it is legal to do in NY but they do it here. They use motor oil and spray it all under the vehicle and in all the body panels. It makes the vehicles a real ecological nightmare but what the heck. They do drip for days too. You gan brush oil on with a paint brush or spray it with a solvent gun. It will NOT kill the rust but it will stop it from spreading until you can treat it with POR-15.
Oil? Are you serious? I've never heard of such a thing. Seems like it would come off every rain storm or car wash. Isn't there something that you can spray on and it will dry?
