I have been toying with the idea of converting my 84 f150 4x4 w/ a 351w to propane. I wanted to see if anyone else has converted to propane, and if so what was noticed after the conversion mileage, power. This truck is splitting duty with my car as a daily driver about 30-40 miles each day so i need it to be reliable, so anything that anyone can give me information on would be greatly appreciated.
Check with your local propane supplier. Ours in NY converts all his trucks to propane. Last I knew it was around $1000 to convert, but that is for big trucks.
If you do by miles/gallon, the mileage will be worse. It's like going from Diesel to gas. Diesel has a lot of BTU's per gallon, gasoline a little less, and propane less still.
It does burn a little hotter, and I know our forklifts that had small block chevies on propane, had special stellite valves for cooling. But they were driven a lot harder than a street vehicle.
One advantage though, is it burns clean as a whistle. When you go to change the oil, it will look like brand new.
Also here in Tx. You have to have a propane inspection once a year. And thoe I don't know the cost of it, it aint cheap! A friend had he's on propane and about 3-4 mpg less on propane. Inspection was like $100. a year
