Hello, Just wondering which fluid belongs in my 99.5 Auto. Been having the fluid changed at a friends Trans/Shop and he has been using Dextron/Mercon III. I've not experienced any problems, yet. I've been reading alot concerning fluids for this "weak link" and getting conflicting information. The Stealership(s) around me didn't even know what fluid to flush my P.Steering with. I will not call them about the tranny. I added a ford 40k cooler upgrade for my truck and want to flush the trans also. I've read that Ford, now, gives it's blessings for the Mercon V in there Ford Transmissions. Then, I've read that Mercon V is not for older Ford trucks. All my info has been read on various forums. I cant afford the sync fluid. Can anyone straighten me out on this fluid Cluster. My book for my truck tells me Mercon ATF, but I think things have changed since 99. Thanks.
Last summer (06) Ford released a TSB announcing Mercon V had been reformulated and is now safe to use in the 4R100. Having said that, mixing of fluids in not recommended so a complete flush is needed.
Just did mine complete w/ Mercon/Dextron III, Always been good. Like Alan said, Ford did give its blessing to the Mercon V. I dont find 1 any better than the other. But I dont think the Mercon will be available once this last batch has sold out.
I've heard the same thing. I will stick with the Dextron/Mercon III. Another question I forgot to ask. I removed the oil fill cap when the engine was running and observed a steady stream of smoke that first apeared to be steam, at least it first looked like steam. The dip stick also. The engine has only 69k. Just wondering if it's normal. I dont have a problem with losing oil. Thanks guys.
Thanks, it scared the #$#$ out of me, we are planning a 2k trip in a week. The light stream is smooth and steady. I just dont remember seeing it before. I dont remember taking the filler cap off before when the engine was running.
