I have a 99 7.3 SD I've decided to keep for a while longer since the 08 seems to be shaping up to be trouble. I want to mod the truck a little and would appreciate some suggestions. I use the truck on the road to haul a race car trailer and would like to keep it road friendly and improve it's handling.
Any suggestions for wheel/tire combo's that will work well on the road but give the truck a better look than the stock setup?
Bolt on engine mods that will give me a little more power without sacrificing reliability and hopefully enhancing fuel economy? Am I better off going with a turn key solution like the Banks, bully dog or putting some components together myself?
2. Free flowing Exhaust: any of them will be fine, 4" or 5" turbo back or downpipe back. 5" will give you louder sound and with the 6" tip looks MEAN and will give you slightly lower EGT's
3. Gauges: Pyro, Boost, Trans Temp these three are a must. Add more to your liking but ensure you have these 3. CSIPSD has I think 12 gauges.
4. Chip: The site favorite is DP Tuner. Dont waste your money with Banks ( I have the 6 gun and it is horrible) or Bullydog. The max power these two tuners make is nothing compared to what DP Tuner has. Check out their link www.dptuner.com
Rims and tires is really a personal choice. What look are you going for? Do you have a lift? How big? I would say since you do alot of towing get tires that are rated for such. I hope this helps and gets you started in the right direction.
Once PMS gets into your veins there is no turning back.
If you are hauling a trailer, get a leveling kit for the front, then get some 35's for it all around. It will look much nicer, and will still be very road friendly.

These trans are the weak point in the drive-train. The best solution to try and keep your trans in good working order is when you order your chip, get the BTS VB. It will firm up the shifts a bit to prevent it from slipping itself away with the new power. How many miles are on your truck?
You should get a shift kit or BTS valve body to help it last longer. If you run a dp-tuner chip, they can burn the tunes with the BTS to have very good shift points.
Thanks, John
Didn't mean to be a smarta$$.
The BTS valve body will buy you time. If you can swing do the converter, too. It is the 'true' weak link in the 4r100. Usually it's hurt (without your knowing it) and eventually takes the transmission.
If the OP's truck is an early '99 then Jody's tunes are bar none (DP Tuner). Although I run Cale's tunes, on stock injectors/stock turbo I would stick with DP.
My .02
Thanks for the tips. Where can I find BTS? Do they have a website? One more question, If I level the front and install 35's won't it throw off my speedometer? Can it be re-calibrated for the 35's?
The speedo is recalibratable you just need the revs per mile the tire manufacturer specs. The PCM will accept one as low as 601 which is just about 35's. As of now it is a dealer only option, but several aftermarket solutions are available - Truspeed comes to mind.
