I have a 94 STX supercab Ranger that has the big sissy looking wavey stripes on the sides and back. My goal is to get them off without messing up the paint. I know some fading has occured every where except where those stripes are, but I think I can buff it out enough so it won't jump out at you, and it'll look better than the stripes do now (IMO). Anyone tried this? Any ideas on how to go about it?
Thanks,
Roy
A heat gun, the type used on electronic shrink tubing, will soften the adhesive under the stripes. Once you get the adhesive/metal good and hot you'll be able to work it up with no damage to the paint.
After that some Goof Off will remove the leftover adhesive. Done this many times with 100% success.
I've used a hair dryer before. I have alot of decals on my truck and to remove one, I soften it with the hair dryer then I use decal remover by 3M for any remaining pieces or residue, it works great. I'm sure a heat gun would work faster and better, but the old hair dryer works in a pinch.
I did a job for a preacher, he had bought a truck with flames on the side.
Said he needed them off, he was getting alot of fire and brimstone jokes.
They came off and he is much more happy now.
Be careful using a heat gun, depending on it's wattage & air flow, it can create air temps of 1000 deg F, or more.
Enough to melt solder or even aluminum, so keep that puppy moving because you can damage your paint with a heartbeat of inattention.
