About a month ago I installed a DP Tuner and a BTS valve body. I was amazed with the power the chip made and how the shifts firmed up.
Well never being one leave well enough alone, I installed an AFE Stage Two air cleaner. The truck seemed to run stronger everywhere, but the new sounds coming from under the hood made me worried. The following day I installed a 4" exhaust and the noises were worse. The whistle was nice, but all the other sounds made me think the turbo was on it's way out. So much so, I parked it until I contacted a someone from a local board, and asked him to listen to it. He laughed and said it was all normal including the surge. Surge, crap so this is what people were talking about. The motor sounded so good except for this damn surge. So I bought this Acme Surge Supressor. It goes in tomorrow. I wonder what this will lead to?
I didn't want to be rude, I dont know, maybe you have a tiny monitor. It's the stock replacement .84. I bought it from Black Widow. The turbo was $1280, with the pedistal and HO outlet $1500. If I decide to go with bigger injectors later, I can replace the housing faily cheaply. But I'm sure I'd never, ever, ever do that!
The real reason I swithed turbos is with the truck stock and the 80 econo tune it ran great, and if there was any surge, I couldn't hear or feel it. With the extra flow from the intake and the lack of any sound dampening, I could hear and feel the surge. Then with the extra flow of exhaust, the surge would happen when just getting on the freeway. The extra turbo whine was cool, the whosh I could learn to like, but the surge is damaging and had to go. It goes in tomorrow, I'm anxious to see how it runs.
I don't have a tiny monitor, and I have seen plenty a turbo grace these pages. I can clearly see it is a turbonetics unit. I just was curiuos about what you bought. Let us know how it works out.
That is a pretty turbo. Acme? For real, (turbonetics spinoff lol) c'mon, you're pulling my leg. What are the specs for it?
Found some specs:
Black Widow Diesel exclusive! Polished finish is standard
Turbonetics Turbos are fully rebuildable . . . .
Specs: Uses a 91mm compressor wheel-a stock turbo is 80MM
61MM inducer, stock is 59 MM

anti surge ports and FAST spoolup-30+ PSI with stock injectors is common. CUSTOM machined .84 quick spool exhaust housing
One-year No Fault/No Hassle warranty
Durning the install the two lower IC boot were showing signs of leaking and were replaced. The fuel filter looked like a chocolate doughnut, and was replaced. I don't know if it was because of the Deisel Clean I've run for the last 100 gal, or it was like that when I bought it.
Fired it up and it sounded a little, not really rougher but "thumpier". After I installed the 4" exhaust I lost a little low end and was hopeful the turbo would bring some of it back. Easing on to the first steet, I could tell I didn't have to worry about low end anymore. It was much, much more responsive then before. I took it easy for about a mile or so just to make sure everything was as it should be and then I rolled onto the freeway on ramp. Coming down the ramp I put the spurs to her. Holly *****, It was like a completly different engine. Not just the bottom but everywhere. It just pulled and pulled. I don't have a boost fooler on yet, so when it hits over 20 something psi I get the SES light for a few minutes. And it get to that psi quick and often. This truck runs hard. Much stronger than I expected. Hell, I was just looking to get rid of the turbo surge.
Let me start off by saying I'm new to diesels and some of you guys have "been there, done that". I have been around diesels for years, I have about 7 or 8 buddies that have run them for years., mostly Chevy and Fords.
I know this sounds corney, but if I were to design a turbo strictly on it's sound, this woud be it. With the windows up you can always hear just a little turbo whine. It's just noticable, not loud, but sound real nice, kind of classy. Put your foot into it and it sounds unbelivable. I was at the beach at the time and it was a little cool outside. I kept the windows down the whole time just so I could hear the turbo in full song and froze the whole way. I know, I know I'm pretty vain.
More on what it's like to drive on the street when I get back. We're taking the Harley out with some freinds for breakfast. I actually think I'd rather go chevy hunting.
Man, I gotta go get another lottery ticket since I can't seem to save for things like that. Too many other obligations. Responsibility can be a heavy responsibility.
