Latest issue on my new truck is the speedometer. When I test drove the truck I thought the speedo was working. It was trailered to my place and I thought it quit working. The other day I was out and I noticed if the rear tires were spinning the speedo would jump up. If I drive normally it doesn't move. Any ideas?
The truck is a 75 F-250 crew cab. Originally it was a standard but the engine and transmission have been changed. They are both out of a 78 Lincoln (460 and C6). So if I under stand things right, originally on the car the speedo would have gone to the transmission but the truck would have had the speedo in the transfer case. I haven't had a chance to check were it is now.
Speedo cables are two pieces. The outer housing and an inner woven steel core. These inner cables need to be greased, otherwise they will bind in the housing and eventually snap. White grease works fine.
Your inner woven steel cable is prolly snapped, universal replacement cables are available at parts houses. Another cause...stripped speedo gear..they are available from Ford...if this is the problem, take the old gear with you to get the correct one. Gear is fastened to cable with a C clip at transmission end. Cable housing has a ear on it which bolts to trans case.

The gear didn't look to bad but I was able to pull the inside cable out a bit so it must be broken. I did't think the speedo would work at all with it broken?
To change the cable I have to take the insturment panel out of the dash?
My speedometer seems to be out of calibration. It seems to be about 20 -30 mph above the real speed. The odometer seems to be working correctly. The previous owner replaced the engine with a 460 if that's any help. Any ideas as to the cause of this?
