Noticed a little oil seepage on the rear transmission crossmember support, directly below the bolted mating flange between the transmission and transfere case. Apparantly either a rear transmission seal leaking or front transfer case seal. Dealer ordered parts and set me up for next week fix. 20,000 miles. The tech said he had been changing several of them. It takes about an hour and a half. Still under warranty, but in my last few months. Seals! Can't imagine what would knock a seal out other than a bad bearing or groved shaft, or installation damage.
crummy out of tolerance initial part, dead head installer damage, improper torque, poor quality control or supervision
There are reasons American manufactures are ALL bleeding red ink!
For what those guys get paid there should be no mistakes. A seal is a cheap part and the lip could have gotten torn or installed crooked. It doesn't always pay for the manuf. to go cheap cause it ends up catching up with them later.
"No sweat... you have a V10 driving that thing, right?"
Thanks Krewat for the allowance, and yes V-10 power for sure. I'd rather post stuff here concerning my rig as there are some real good replys by some old pros, you included, and who knows, maybe something new comes out of itall.
I'm starting to wonder now if all that fun I had in that snow blizzard we had three weeks ago is what gave that weak seal it's last gasp. I was having fun, spinning, plowing thru drifts, and generally showing off, and now, well, we'll see. It should still be warranty, but I am getting close to the 36 mo. cut off. I never really did 4-wheeling in deep snow before I purchased those Cooper tires. They really bite, and I am sure the stress loads and oil temps increase on the driveline compared to the Conti smooth treads that just spin and give up. Whatever, I will know more next week and post back.
4wd, I've done some amazing things with my '01 - same things you've done, plus pulling 2-foot diameter trees (complete with crown) out of the woods in 4LOW, stumps, you name it.
No leaks.
I suspect you just have a defective seal in there, and it'll be fine forever more.
Sometimes, the seals they use, have a coating on the outside diameter, which is supposed to seal against the transfer-case/tranny. If you **** the seal slightly while installing, that coating will come off, and the seal will leak - not through the rubber lip, but around the outside. Or, a dab of high-tack or RTV around the outside is a good idea. I wonder how much of that stuff is done by computers/robots and how much by direct human labor...
