I currently have a 89 f250 with a 351w and was wondering if i should build up the 351 or switch to a 460 big block. and if i go with the 460 should i go with efi or carburetor?
I did it in my 86, the power of the 460 vs a built 351 was quite a bit. I could smoke the tires all day with the 460, the 351 was powerful but the lose of mpg was not good. Got about 6 with the 351, 8 with the 460. Both were carbed, 351 had a 750 holley DB, explains the fuel issue.
I now have an 88 fuelie 351 that gets 9mpg. The fuel injection is better for most applications(off road at high angles, more consistant fuel delivery to the engine). The disadvantage of fuel injection is wiring and fuel pressure. Takes a bit of work.
I am personally thinking of going back to the carb due to cost of rebuilding the fuelie or putting in the built 351 with the Holley Truck Avenger on it. The 750 isn't really good for street appliocations.
Just my 0.02 worth and experiences.
i have a 460 that is carbed...not neccesarily (although i agree about the whole efi issue) because its easier to mess with, but my 460 is out of a 68 lincoln....most of the parts are stronger and it should have about 10:1 stock with i believe 360-ish hp (i think....could be wrong) but the older 460s are the way to go in my opinion.
It all depends on what you want to do with your truck! if you think a small block is going to pull it around go with it. but for me i tried everything ,the only thing that was going to move my truck with ease was a 460. i tooka 365 hp and did more and got a little more out of it.. untill i drove the 514 and even liked that more . but that wasnt enough thats why i went 557. as for efi i cant find a combo that makes the hp im lookin for!!
how much are you willing to spend? what tranny is currently bolted to your 351w? efi has its advantages and will make more power then carb you just need to understand it and know what system to use. if your 5.8 is bolted to a C6 or a zf 5speed then getting this mass air harness http://rjminjectiontech.com/?p=26, get a mustang mass air ecu and stroke that 5.8 to a 408 running some AFR heads, gt40 or trickflow intake, BBK headers, bassani Y pipe and 3" exhaust out stock location it will run circles around any stock 460 for sure. you can figure well over 400hp and 400lb torque
I Have A 1988 F-250 4x4 All Stock With A Efi 460 C6 Trans Truck Is In Great Shape Except Now Is Running Rich At Idle Or In P/n.sometimes It Want To Die Out,seems To Lack The Power.my 1977 F-350 Was A Power House.
