Replacing gears on a 93 5.8L Bronco
My bronco has stock gears (I believe 2.90s) and I want to replace them so it tows better. Right now I get 11mpg, but when I tow it goes down to 6mpg. Anyone here gear theirs different? I want to put on 3.73s so I can get better torque without sacrificing gas mileage. I have a rebuilt 350 engine, rebuilt tranny with shift kit, and 30" tires. I am about to put on 31s, K&N intake, and dual out the exhaust.
Any tips would be appreciated.

I bet you've got 3.55s right now. See this link before you do anything else:

Given the general expense of regearing, going to 3.73 is such a small change it's hardly worth the effort. Go 4.10 if you tow and are gonna run 31's.
I bet you have a 351, not a 350
Other than the redneck quality of it, dual exhaust will not necessarily help you, but all the cowboys will be envious. If only you could fit a headache rack to a Bronco....
if you don't do anything w/the stock manifolds I doubt dual exhaust will net any gains (but everyone who has it will SWEAR it did with their super accurate butt-dyno). Show me verified dyno results (not from a bolt-on exhaust manufacturer) and I'll believe it. People just hear the throatier sound, which is a result of a different muffler, not dual exhaust, and *think* they're hauling a--. If anything dual exhaust may hurt your low end torque, not the best for towing.

Thanks honney, that is some good advice. I did check my gears, and they are 3.55s. I am VERY suprised at the lack of towing power in these gears. I've ran 3.73 on my other vehicles and they pull great.
I was recommended the dualed exhaust from a friend. I have to replace my exhaust anyways, so I figured I would go for dualed out. I don't care about the sound, in fact, I can't stand loud vehicles. I simply want to help the performance on my Bronco.
Thanks for the tips, and I will check into the 4.10 gears.
