Electric fuel pumps?
He called me last night looking for some info on a fuel delivery issue. I was surprised when he said it appeared that it didn't use a mechanical fuel pump. The provision for the fuel pump on the timing cover is blocked off. He also said NAPA showed both a mechanical pump and an electric for that year, but they didn't say whether it was in-tank or not.
He was asking me if that meant that each tank has an electric pump inside. I could tell right quick if I could see for myself, but the truck is a ways away. I'm not aware that Ford used electric pumps on carbed engines, but I suppose it's possible. Probably something to do with reducing the chance of vapor lock.
Was this a common feature for that year?
What kind of problems is your friend having? I have an 86 F-250 with electric pumps so if I can help, I'd be happy to do so. And if I can't help you, I know for a fact that someone else here can.
It's just that I haven't seen the truck yet, and I'd never heard of a carbed Ford with in-tank pumps, although I'm sure it's possible. I have two manuals that say that ALL carb engines have mechanical pumps, but I've seen plenty of errors in shop manuals before.
He was asking for help over the phone, and since I couldn't verify that it had electric pumps, I couldn't tell him what to do. He's gonna drag the truck in to work sometime so I can take a look. Trying to coach him by remote control through checking relays, fuses, and fuel pressure would take all day, kinda like in the movies where an airplane pilot has a heart attack and his wife has to be taught over the radio how to land the plane.
