I did a search but couldn't find the answer to my question. On my PSD auto transmission I've decided I need a temp gauge. Does the sending unit replace the OEM sending unit? Can you have both gauges operable or just the aftermarket? I'd prefer not to spice into the cooling line. Can both dash and aftermarket gauges be driven by the same sending unit?
I'm fairly confident that the factory sender is in an internal location. If you install a sending unit into the pressure test port, as I did, your gauge will take it's signal from a different location with no effect on the factory gauge, nor how the factory signals interact with other PCM functions. You can then be fascinated and amazed at how the factory gauge moves in a manner with zero correlation to how the factory gauge moves.
I think there are , but have no specific knowledge of, monitors you can buy that use factory sender signals and show those data figures on a digital readout.

No, it does not. The OEM is internal. If you were to remove it the trans isn't going to operate correctly because the PCM uses it, too.

I wouldn't, either.

No. The aftermarket gauge will come with it's own sending unit. Almost every sending unit is an 1/8" NPT dryseal thread, which is EXACTLY what the pressure test port in the side of the trans case is.
Just above the pan on driver's side of the trans, near the front of the trans, is a black hex head plug. Remove the plug (you'll only lose an ounce or so of fluid) and screw the sender in. That's all there is to it!
Thanks Guys! Now all I have to do is decide on the gauge. It appears that Autometer is the preferred brand here. Need to decide between the $56 or $130 gauge (Phantom II) and how to mount it. I'd prefer the steering column pod but they don't list them for the '07 SD
