Ok I have been steadily working on my 60 panel. I have now decided to go with disc in the front since I found and bought a set of disc brake brackets, hardware and a pair of calipers for a 57-64 conversion. So when they get here (should tomorrow) I will now have manual disc/drum brakes.
I have question though.
As I was changing out the 3rd member for some 2.75 gears (so could get better gas millage and better crusin speeds) there was only 3 or 4 brass washers under the bolts that hold on the 3rd member. Now in the article I read about rebuilding the rear end it states that you should make shure not to damage those brass washers. But mine did not even have them and never leaked. Sooooo do I really need them now? my truck never leaked oil from the rear end.
Rear axle parts list # 91 .. 1957/72 Ford 9" rear axle. The parts list shows no brass washers, nor does the rear axle picture show any, either. The only thing listed are the 10 lock nuts.
I just replaced my 9" 3rd member last month and ran onto the same thing. I had to have the 3rd member rebuilt by a reliable establishment. They told me that the brass washers are to stop fluid leaks thru the screws. They said that they use RTV sealant on the threads and a dab around the studs in place of the brass washers.
I bought a new bearing and gear rebuild set on ebay and it came with the brass washers, but taking the third member out it didn't have them on there. It's got them now, whether or not it needs them.
Aren't those soft copper crush washers? Brass is very hard and won't prevent oil seepage. Anyhow, I think they basically serve as a type of lock washer and might seal the threads. RTV works well.
Yes, they are copper and come with the rebuild kits, and can also be ordered seperately from most parts suppliers if you need them. Anything that can stop a leak is a good thing in my book, but a little thread sealer would probably do in a pinch.
