While driving my x today I stepped down to pass, the tranny downshifted down two gears, increased rpm but didnt seem to increase mph. I then backed off the throttle to approx. 80% and then it began to pull like normal. The simptoms only appear at wide open throttle. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
I am running a v10 with no mods. I happened to run into a ford tech today a lunch and he said it sounded like a fuel filter issue. Does this make sense?
Were RPMs increasing but speed stayed the same? Thats more then likely a slipping transmission, or possibly a bad torque converter but i doubt it if its running fine otherwise. If RPM's are rising in a gear, the vehicle should accelerate.
If it was a clogged fuel filter you would go lean, have a very noticable fall on its face feeling when it went to high rom, and possibly some loud popping noise like a muffled backfire. Bottom line, if your RPM was going up, you were getting fuel, and you were not accelerating. All symptoms point to trans/torque converter in my eyes.
Remember at high RPM you are making more power taht the transmission has to hold. If its on its way out, this is when it will slip, under heavy loads.
