I have a 99 eb expo and the front end is really squeeking every time I hit a bump or turn the steering wheel, If i shake the truck it squeeks, I am having a hard time pinpointing it, I tried wd40 on all the tie rods and bushings. I know it is a known problem on fords. Does anyone have any input on this matter. thanks
Just had my Expy fixed for the same problem. It had low miles, but it was the idler arm. I've seen other posts where it could be the lower/upper ball joints. Luckily, I dodged that bullet.
I had somewhat the same problem except mine was more a "clicking" sound coming from the passenger side. Believe it or not it removed the battery and tray and there is a metal clip for the tray on the wheel well that was for some reason making that clicking sound. I sprayed it with some lithium grease and haven't heard it since. ( over a year ago )
mine was the Lower control arm bushings. Exact same problem and when it rained, people would be staring at me when I went over a speed bump. It was the most annoying noise in the world.
I took it to a mechanic who said he could just replace the bushings. $200 later I was running fine. A week later, and it was squeeking worse than before.
Cost me $300 to have the driver side replaced at Ford. 6 months later, and no squeaking. Ford doesn't replace the bushings, they replace the whole A-frame.
I have seen this on many different trucks.
Your MOST LIKELY cause is the Lower Ball Joint
I know the noice is AWFUL.
My wife questioned its safty.
(Do each side separetly)
1. Lift the truck by the Lower Control Arm (Unload the ball joint)
2. Turn your wheel back and forth.
3. Most likely the noise will be gone, "Lower Ball Joint Replacement"
4. If it is still there, look closer at the Tie Rods and Idler Arm.
