I've read about vaseline, and I have used it on some of my older stuff, and currently on my RV. Seems to work.
Same book also suggested sprinkling baking soda on top of the batt. Also said to put a few pennies there.
Baking soda to absorb some of the stuff, and the pennies to corrode instead of some of the other stuff-- generally both
combinng to reduce the corrosive atmosphere.
I've done this as well, and the baking soda shows signs of absorption. The pennies definitely corrode. Dosen't seem to hurt anything and it might be helping.
