At work we have a 2000, F450, 4wd, auto. 7.3. I was changing the oil the other day and saw the oil pan is ready to rot though (road salt, this is a plow truck too). Am I going to have to pull the engine to change the pan? Or do I have room with the engine just lifted?
Also the truck has 222,000 miles on it. If I had to pull the engine, what else would you recommend I change? seals, oil pump? We are going to keep this truck for one or two more years.
The engine has to be pulled to do it properly. If you are mechanically inclined it is not hard to do at all. I am 17 and i had one helper and it wasn't that hard. I am doing that along with a sleu of other things to our 1995 plow truck which has also seen 88000 miles of hardcore snowplowing and SALTING. I had to buy a new pan, i wish someone would make something thicker or something other than stamped steel. I just picked up the 1/2 tube of caulk-gun sealant for the oil pan and intake plenums. While you are in there, i would change the oil pump with that many miles, it is located on the front of the crankshaft, directly behind the front cover. While you have the pan off, it is wise to retorque every nut or bolt you can get to. Specifically main caps, rod stud nuts, cylinder head bolts, rocker posts, and injectors. I dont know what else to say other than that. Good luck.
Just a thought? I know that this may be extreme but could you buy a new pan and then have it powder coated? Powder coating is very durable and should last some time against salt.
I only get on here when I need info for work (all Fords, 2000s and 2006s) This is the first time I needed to post, all the other times I've found it by searching.
Another thing to check while the oil pan is off is the piston cooling jets. They have a record of coming loose and ending up in the bottom of the oil pan.
