Just wondering if a 1 ton shop crane would be strong enough to to pull a motor and tranny out of a truck. HF has one that folds up on sale for 99 bucks. Reg 169.00 would it be worth getting or not. ............RUSTY
Yes. It will hold 2000 pounds which is more than an engine and tranny. I have a HF 1-1/2 ton non foldable that I used to install engine with tranny in my 55.
Rusty,
My shop has limited space also, so when I bought my cherry picker I opted for the foldable one as well. It still has quite a large footprint but it helps being able to fold the legs up.
You will appreciate it. I know that when I was fitting my Caddy engine I had it in and out numerous times and the constant headaches of trying to borrow one or rent one got old in a hurry.
I have a foldable one also. It worked great pulling the motor and I also use it to lift off the bed as a unit. Like Bobby said, when folded, it still has a pretty big footprint, but its a lot smaller than when folded out. I store it in a corner of the garage. I've used mine a lot.
Its a decent unit I am using one right now. I picked up their load leveler for $22 or so and it is nice to have. The **** on the load leveler was very gay and was a pain to use, I welded a nut on it and use my air ratchet to adjust it, 1000 times better.
SAFETY NOTICE
With anything that may at some time be holding crushing weight over your body, please do a test lift.
Attach lift to heavy object, apply tension, listen for loud pops, snaps, cracks and such. Inspect pump seals for leaks. Apply more tension, do the above, and watch for leakdown.
Definitely get the foldy kind. I'm borrowing one that doesn't fold, it just disassembles. The base is all one piece, and it's huge. It currently lives under my truck, because that's the only place with enough open floor space. It belongs to a member of our sports car club, and his solution to storing the darn thing is whoever borrows it has to store it untill someone else borrows it. Then THEY have to store it.
it was kinda touched on.... but pay attention to the limit of the boom... the further it's extended... the less it will hold... it will handle 2000# when fully collapsed... and drops exponentially as it's extended... look at the one BrianB showed... fully extended the lift limit is 1/2. and I've never seen one used fully collapsed, they're always stretched out to the limit !
If you're dealing with a big block like a 460, you're looking at 700-800 # dressed and if you load it in the frame with the transmission attached you're pushing 1/2 ton. I'm like Penn Dick the list of dead people I know is growing every day due to natural causes... don't need to add to it 'accidentally'
as for size... I was given a two ton unit but it doesn't fold up... it takes up about 4' x 6' of floorspace. It's in an outside shed with all terrain wheels under it and my engine stand stored on top of it... lots of wasted space. One day I'm gonna modify it to fold up to about 4' x 2' and roll it in a corner... yea, one day... I've only been planning that project since '98.
with the all terrain wheels it's handy in the yard also for pulling fence posts, lifting heavy stuff like old blocks and rear ends that have found a home here.. the older I get the more mechanical help I look for when moving heavy stuff around. I've been trying to find a way to rig the mast and boom on back of my cub cadet for a mini boom truck... it's right under that fold up project on the list
A friend of mine has a huge one for his shop. He does all of the UPS maintenance, so he is lifting with it all the time. It does not fold up. You flip it over on its back and it is its own trailer. It has large wheels and a trailer hitch on it.
As john said, mine fully extended is 1/4 the total limit (2 ton). If you are lifting engine and trans at once.....be extremely careful! Get the biggest one you can. It will be safer in the long run.
Mine is 2 ton...1 1/2 ton....1 ton....1/2 ton. Thats only 500 pounds!!!!!!
I saw one collapse on monster garage one time and drop a big V8 (no trans).
Jeff: No one wants to borrow yours simply because then they have to store it.
