yesterday my oil pressure guage was toward the high side of the normal range while idling in park. when i put it in gear and started down the driveway it was jumping all over the place, then it pegged out to the 0 side and never moved till i was parked again. is this a bad sending unit, the gauge, or the pump??? it's a 95 f150 with 300-6. 160K miles.
First thing I would check is the connection on the sending unit itself.
1) Wire could be loose
2) Could be a corroded connection
3) Might be a broken wire getting intermittent connection
Chiltons says that if you disconnect the connector and ground it to the block, The guage should read about half scale or midway.
When not grounded, It should read low or below.
If not, Then the guage itself is out of calibration.
---played with connection
---lifters were not rattling, so i'm figuring on the sending unit or wiring
---i've got a new pump and sending unit coming today, will start with sending unit and work my way to dropping the pan.
--also, before the gauge went dead going down the road, the first time it was reading fine, but would spike everytime the tranny shifted,
