I have a 99 E250 having 120,000 miles with a 5.4 and rod knock from the rear rods (check visually - heavy scoring). Are there other engines I can swap in (4.6 v8, 4.9 straight 6, older engines - 351, 460, etc) that I can install and that will bolt up to the 4r70w I had just spent $800 on? On the 4.6 and 4.9 do I have to change the ECU IF they are swappable? If installing the 351 or 460 can I just run a MSD ignition to run it without hooking up to the harness?
Its a "farm truck" class so meeting specific emmission standards is not a real problem.
A 4.6L or 5.4L are your only choices. Nothing else is going to bolt to that trans. And if you found an adaptor o make it bolt together the trans won't operate unless the PCM is controlling both the engine and trans. And that PCM only knows how to control a 5.4L. If you did put a 4.6L you could swap the PCM for a 4.6L/4R70W PCM.
Why not replace with a 5.4, you'll be loaded with a headache of modifications to put in an older engine, and the current transmission will not go with the older engines, you'd need to replace it. To go without electronics, you'd need an old carbed engine, and it's transmission, design mounts after doing the placement layout, has to be tilted correctly, centered, etc.

why not use the 5.4?..from what Ive read on this forum, its only a matter of time before another would blow. Another reason is the $2,500 to $3,000 Im getting quoted for crate motors and the cheapest used motor local I have found is $1,700 with 80k on it. This when I can get a used low mile 460 or 351 for $500 all day long, not to mention builder motors from the yards for $150 and I put a kit in one.
I was considering an engine from and earlier similar body van so that everything would fit (92 up) to get away from the 5.4 mod motor...that is why I asked just what would fit/swap. I know a friend has a 93 with a 460 in it but I asked and he has an AOD tranny.
The body appears the same, but there is retooling of the firewall, doghouse and possably the frame, the 5.4 is larger. I can't tell you how many I've seen 200,000 miles and more, I'm not sure where the information comes from that they don't last long, probably from people who abuse them and don't take proper care. I know a guy who has modded the 5.4 in his truck and raced it for a while in it's life, has over 100,000 miles on it and hasn't required any engine repairs.
We have 2 E250s at my shop with over 200,000 miles on them. They run great & don't use much oil. Less than 2 qts between changes. They have 5.4s in them. You would be better off finding a used 5.4 or 4.6 for your swap. The mod motors seldom fail at the mileage yours did. I have raced my 97 F150 with the 5.4 many trips down the quarter mile plus I've run the crap out of it & it still runs great with 130,000 miles on it. It only uses a 1/2 quart of oil betwen changes. The 5.4 is a good truck motor. You will have lots of changes to make to swap in a older motor in your van & you will need a different tranny.
