I have a 2001 f350 crew cab, I want to put a bigger tranny cooler on it, I will be pulling a 31 foot 5th wheel camper with a boat behind it. What is everyone using. I have heard about using one off of a 6.0 psd, thats fine but what else do you need to hook it up or will it bolt right on. Are the cooling lines the same also. thanks
By the way I do have the stock convertor with the t/c lockup kit installed on it so I can lock it up to keep the heat down this summer.
BTS installed mine, but from what I understand it's pretty simple. Use the stock mounting location and holes, just mount it upside down with the inlet/outlet at the bottom. Like SG said, some adapters and a bit of hose is all you need. Cut the stock fittings off, push the hose over the stock hard lines, and secure them with hose clamps. From what I can see that's how mine is done anyway.
Ok thanks guys for the info, I will dig into it a little more this weekend. I will see what the ford dealer here in town will have for a cooler. Is there any type of additve that can be run in the tranny to help temps stay down without harming the tranny.
Many of us have installed the Trucool in "addition" to the stock cooler; no real need to take out a perfectly working cooler; simply add another one in line. The trucool has a thermal bypass on the top fins so when the tranny oil is a bit cool it won't flow through the rest of the cooler and over cool it. I tow 8,000# in 90* heat and temps stay around 140-150*. For $120 it is hard to beat.
I just bought a new Tru Cool from the classifieds for a great price, and I'm going to install this spring when I flush the tranny. I was looking for a 6.0 on flea bay and man they are getting almost $200.00 for them, so I figured with money I saved I'll pull my PCM get a flash from Jodi, and toss my old chip.
Another common failure on the AT is the bypass valve. It will fail open and the transmission will overheat. Suggest buying one and installing it along with your new ATF cooler.
After hangin out on this forum and reading some of the stories on gagged trannys I decided to install another cooler on Bigred! I found a new 24000 lb Tekonsha Defender plate cooler on EBAY that I put in series with the OEM cooler! I pulled my 28 ft Fiver to FL this last Jan and I started out here in the mtns. I never saw more than 170 deg on my gage the whole trip! Was a piece of cake to install and they give you all the needed hardware! Nice quality cooler!!
I found some listed on ebay, they are the tru-cool kind that say 28000 gvw. They have them listed for $79.00. I might get on of these, I also want to plumb it in with my stock cooler.
By the way I noticed at napa they have high pressure transmission hose, I assume its to put in the transmission cooler lines in case you need to extend a line. Its rubber kind of like fuel hose.
Another thing, these guys on ebay with the tru-cool 28000 gvw coolers keep talking about the coolers having a "low pressure Drop" what does that mean. thanks
Well, here is what I decided. I ordered the tru-cool 4739 max from diesel stop.
It will give me a total of 40,000 gvw when hooked to my factory cooler, I would have liked to have gotten the 6.0 cooler but I am sure it would have went for alot more money. Thanks Guys
