1988 F-150 Drivetrain problem

I just bought this truck today. Straight 6 on a 5 Speed Manual Tranny. Went and picked up the truck drove it about 20 miles and pulled over to check my Waterlevels, because there is a small leak from the water neck. Anyway, got back in the truck and started it no problem. But now I can't put it in gear. Let the clutch out and it stalls. I got a wrecker and When he pulled the truck on his bed the back wheels were locked up. Any suggestions? Now when I try to put it into any gear it won't go. If I let the cutch out I feel the truck wanting to go forward. It feels like the tranny is stuck in gear and won't release it.

I would start be removing your driveshaft and spinning the rear wheels around. If they spin then its a transmission issue; if they don't then its probably an issue with your rear pumpkin, or possible seized up breaks. If the truck idles in neutral with no problems then I wouldn't suspect that the transmission is causing the problem when going into gear... Hard to say...

Exactly! it is the weirdest thing I ever came across. I will check the rear breaks tomorrow. Also the previous owner told me he had the Clutch worked on. Is it possible that the gearshift could be inserted wrong into the transmission?

Whoa I guess I missed this part. So the truck still feels like its in gear when in neutral? Does it die?

Yes it dies when you let the clutch out. Even though the stick is in neutral. Also can not shift into any of the gears.

In this case, you are definitely have a problems in the transmission. If you turn the truck off and leave it in neutral with the parking break off, can you push the truck forward with a buddy or 2? I assume you couldn't, just trying to narrow things down here. I'm not very familiar with the standard transmission, sorry.

I would say that the transmission is stuck in gear. Is the shifter loose feeling when you put it into the gear slots or does it feel normal?

It doesn't even fell like it is going into another gear. The "stick" moves freely side to side in the "Neutral" position put it does not go into the slots like it should.

Again, I don't know much about working on standard transmissions, but is there some kind of linkage between the shifter and the tranny that could have broken??

broken shift fork. Its causing your shifter handle to move to neutral & its actually in gear. This is my guess.

Ok, here is what I checked so far. It's not the rear end or the brakes. I disconnected the rear end from the driveshaft. The rear end moves freely. I pulled the shifter out of the "cup" on top of the transmission. Everything lines up in there. I am about to give up and take it to a shop.
