This is my 1st post and enjoy the forum. I have a 02 7.3 cc long bed srw with 3.73 with 110k miles and I will possibly be taking the plunge buying the 08 f350 with v10. I get 6-8 mpg pulling our 38 ft toyhauler thats loaded to about 16k pounds. I plan on getting 4.30 gear ratio. Will it do the job? I am also planning on adding: Banks powerpak, larger fuel tank. Your input will be appreciated.
3v V10s gain NOTHING from the banks kits save your dollars
Good luck with the larger fuel tank....expensive and kills most of the good electroninc doodads on the driver information console.... For 5er long tows I have a bed mounted tank that I can just refill the factory tank from and store when not towing long trips. Basically is use it to take advantage of the rare days when I find regular 10 to 20 cents off the normal price and bank the 55 gallons of cheaper fuel for the next long trip
My typical range with the Long beds 38 gallon tank and GCVW of 22,800 +/- is 38x7.9mpg or 300 miles +/- ,,------basically 250 miles and the computer lets you know "low on fuel 50 miles to empty"....when I top off, it usualy eats 32~34 gallons
At 50+ and an equally aging wife our bladders are not in for any more 500 mile stretches between stops
Yes the 4.30:1 is a good choice for heavy towing as is the 5R110w Torqshift auto trans
Some went back to diesel but the majority of us are fairly ticked off that Ford does such a poor job of promoting this motor option...we tend to think it is the absolute best bang for the buck motor in a heavy duty tow haul machine.
I installed a Transfer Flow 46 gal tank in my 07 XLT V10. Works great for towing, especially in the middle of the desert or in the mountains. Peace of mind knowing you got long range capability. Besides my V10 gets very thirsty when towing heavy loads.
If you are agreeing with me on the bed mounted additional fuel tank please disreguard these questions
But if you outed the factory tank for a bigger replacment fuel cell tell the complete story so folks here can make informend decisions
You need to tells us all about
Cost?
Original 29 or 38 gal?
What does work and what does not work on the dash?
Warranty issues?
Emission system Issues?

I opted for the undercarrage 46 gal replacement tank. My XLT does not have a trip computer. My fuel gauge works perfectly with the new tank in that the replacement tank is rectangular. I have a hard tonneau cover on the bed so the tool box/tank was not an option for me. The cost of the tank was $1300 installed. My original tank was 29 gallons. No warranty or emission issues here in Arizona. California may have issues as they always do. (I lived in California for 18 years so I am intitled to complain.) Hope this answers your questions.
I own a 2001 E350 2wd with the V10 and a 1999 F250 Superduty 4x4 with the 7.3. Both have 3.73 rear ends and 4r100 transmissions. Both have K&N intakes and custom exhaust.
I use both to tow various loads ( hay trailer, car hauler, camper, etc.) and both do a great job. The one disagreement I have with most of the other folks here is regarding mileage issue. My 7.3 gets way better mileage than my v10.
