i have a 98 f150 with a conventional 8.8 the truck has 139,000 miles, the rear end makes exsessive noise [like 2 plates rubbing together] this tells me that the ring and pinion is probably worn out. i would like to change to a limited slip when i do the gears. my question is if i found a complete rear with the set up i want and its cheaper than the rebuild, can i use any rear up to 2004 and will it be a direct bolt in. i.e. pinion flange, spring pearch drum to disc. also i have noticed that some trucks with the tow package have a larger pumkin is this just a beefed up 8.8 or is it a 9 something.
Sorry I cant help you with the differential tech question....but all V6 and 4.6L V8 engines got the 8.8 rear axle. All the 5.4L trucks got the 9.75 rear axle. The F250LD got the Sterling 10.25. Towing package had no influence on axle choices....
thanks that helps me alot. i did'nt think about the 5.4 having influence on rearend sizes. now i just need to find out if i can swap to disc brakes without any problems or should i just try to find one with drums.
If I recall...All trucks after 2001 had rear disc brakes. (when I was truck shopping...all 2001 and up models I looked at had rear disc's). Maybe you could search the junkyards for a complete axle with the brakes already on there. Or look for a wrecked truck that someone is parting out.
If not...then do a search for an 8.8 disc brake conversion.
Either way, you will need a proportioning valve (or master cylinder from a truck with factory disc brakes) to control how much pressure is sent to the rear (more pressure than drums).
thanks for the info you have anserwed all my questions. I used to keep up on all the older stuff, im an old school guy I know how to do the work i just need help on what interchanges and what does'nt. thanks again.
