i purchased a 1978 F100 with a 390 that has recently been rebuilt. My q is , can i drop the oil pan and pull rods out to install new pistons? The piston in there now give me a low compression. Also does anyone know of cheap headers that will fit the truck with this engine? Right now the truck is pretty sluggish. It sounds like it has lil step up cam with edelbrock street master intake and edelbrick carb 650 cfm. I have adjusted carb and timing to about 10 deg to BTDC and it doesnt really seem to help. I would also like to know if anyone has good build up list. I would like to raise compression to 10:1 and get cam , intake and carb but for now i would just like the truck to wake up a little.......Thanks..........Mack
No, Piston are installed and removed for the top. Initial timing really doesn't tell you what the timing is at max advance and that's what you need to know for preformance. What kind of advance curve the distributer has is the telling information for engine preformance.
Do you happen to have any build specifics for that engine, cam specs? There is a bit more to changing pistons than just slappin 'em in there. With the info we have at this point, new pistons may not do anything.
ive have done engine builds b4......let me ask me q differently. I know that i install the pistons via the top but can i drop the oil pan from the bottom. The bores are really clean at 30 over . I havnt picked the truck up yet so i havnt really got to look at it as much as id like to figure this info out on my on and im lil anxious to get the ball rollin.I dont have any specs on the engine, i cant even find any casting numbers on it. under the starter or anything so i guess illl be pulling a head off to measure bore and stroke just to make sure the guy im bought it from was right about what the engine really is.Thanks for the help..........Mack
Do yourself a favor and just pull the motor out to do the work.....Cleanliness is king when assembling an engine and you just don't find that trying to work under/over a truck. Whats wrong with the existing intake?........aMP
