Ok ..... the Toyota Power steering for their 79-84 4x4 pickups is a nifty deal... without question ..... for fitting a decent sized power box into a 48 F1. I'm at that stage on mine right now.
But..... the prices here in the northwest are getting as high as California. $125 to $175 is the deal there, and now here too. The problem is that there are virtually none available in the Spokane area.
Do any on this forum have some good sources of wrecking lots that might be reasonable, and willing to ship?
If the prices have risen everywhere to the level of what I'm seeing here, then something else may have to be used in this steering refit. I can get Saginaw boxes with low mileage for $25, and some work in the drag link mode. It does take more fab work of course, but might just be worth the effort. Guess we in the F1 work have made these boxes pretty high value??
I know that other complete systems for suspension and steering are out there. I even have two different setups in hand, but I'm determined to keep the retro look of the I-beam axle. I know it has its limitations, but old look stuff is my thing, along with a few improvements for modern speeds.
Pull'n'save or pick'n'pull should have something. Did you try them or spaldings? I usually see Toyota pickups out there when I am getting more "quality" parts for my Ch**y.
www.car-part.com is where I got mine. They have several listed from 50-100.00
Even if you have to buy a rebuilt one at NAPA etc for ~300.00 it's worth it. There are other boxes that could possibly be kludged to work, but no where near as easy and perfect as this one. There are kits to use the saginaw box, but they are much more expensive in the long run, and you'll need a farm field to make a U-turn. Not fun!
Try car-part.com. Got mine from a yard in upper michigan, and all for less than $60 shipped. It's heavy remember. Of course, was late last summer so I don't know the current prices
I'll check with car-parts.com. And 'White Knuckles' ... I did check with the Spaldings folk in Spokane. A family friend works there and keeps me up to speed on what they have. It's the year issue that is the problem. Lots of later ones are always available .... the earlier stuff is not common now.
