That's a pretty cool tool!

Remember, one thing. 8mm's (the stud size) is .3149"

5/16" is 3.125"

So, I think a 5/16" would work on these studs.

I'll say one thing - if you do try them, let us know how it goes. That's a pretty slick piece...

Here's some more pics, broken studs, and the one DO NOT DO THIS with the off-center hole

All the wet oil is Gibbs penetrating oil. Good stuff...

It came out. I only knicked the threads on one side, and looking at it, the threads still look perfect.

The stud that came out, however, you can see THROUGH the threads

Vaery Very Very close there you little rabbit! but I must ask how you got your little little body in that big big area to work on this little job .That has gotten you lots of alone time in the garage with many many beer induced drilling manuvers ??????????

Just slight play on your silly rabbit ,whats up dock ?????

The worst thing working on cars an trucks are broken bolts in bad places

I seen so many in my yrs ,but I still cringe every time it happens.
broke a couple on a intakemanifold one time cost me a weeks pay yrs ago

Rich, thankfully, they were the bottom rear-most studs on both sides.

Otherwise, I would have been removing all sorts of things in the way

Art, I think they make some smaller sizes too. They are on the Craftsman site as Drill Extractors.

Well, I'm in the gang of broken stud trucks, my 01 f250 V10 has atleast 3 on very brief inspection that are broken off. Other than warping the manifolds and leaking exhaust into the truck, can this damage my head or valves?

It certainly won't help the sealing surface of the head, but I can't really think of anything damaging.

Except, of course, for the carbon monoxide that might get into the cab. Dangerous stuff, that. Been there, done that, was exposed to 650ppm (enough to kill in 45 minutes - I was in it for 20) and never want to go back. That was from my '74 highboy idling 15 feet away from the garage door.

eBay headers came in today, not bad looking, gotta say.

Nice welds, someone took the time to grind off all the slag and ridges inside, and I like the gaskets.

I'll post pictures later.

Next step, tomorrow, cleanup and INSTALLATION.

Nope, brand-new. They've been selling these stainless headers on eBay for quite a while now, a few people have used them, and for $200 (including shipping) I'm going to give them a shot. This particular set, the seller offers a 1-year warranty. Not bad.

I can (by eye!) tell they are straighter than the old log manifolds I just took off. I can just imagine my machinist's face if I told him he'd have to mill stainless logs

So far, it looks like the supplied bolts are too short by a mile. I really don't want only 1/2" worth of thread inside the head. There's at least a full inch of thread in the hole... The bolts are 1" if I'm lucky... oh well. Off to the hardware/auto-parts store tomorrow...

Hey, I'm only 41! And the milling and bolt-kit was what sold her... so SHUSH!

Was working on the frame rail on the passenger side today, and installing the driver's side.

Bitch to get to the bottom bolts on that side. Can't get them started. Might wind up slotting the bottom holes on the header ...

More tomorrow
