I have just got a 1977 f150 custom (canada) with the 400m, and it's in great shape, (new block), but want to do some work on it. I'm looking to make it fast, and loud with lot of torque. I'm not looking for a mudder or anything, just a nice fast truck. Anyway, as far as I understand, ford the choked the hell out of these engines in order to meet emmissions standards. I don't have a massively huge budget but i was thinking of doing a much more aggressive Cam, a new intake manifold, new carb, and of course exhaust. I was just wondering if anybody had any suggestions for the cam. I was thinking like 0.450 or something. And what about the carb. 600cfm four barrel? Please any suggestions would be awesome!
Thanks!
Not to be nit picky, but there's no such thing as a 400M.
Only 351M or 400.
Ok the basic things really wake these engines up.
Put you a 600 CFM carb(edelbrock or holley), new intake(Edelbrock Performer 400 or Weiand Action +Plus), a RV cam and lifters(like the comp cams 255 DEH ), matched valve springs, valve spring retainers, valve locks, valve stems seals, a double roller timing chain(set straight up to zero), headers and duals.
And when you install the cam make sure you readjust the valve timing. Ford retarded the valve timing 4 degrees from the factory. A good double roller timing set will have a crank gear with 3 key-ways in, 4 degrees advanced, straight up and 4 degrees retarded. Straight up is the way to go.
if you read through all the topics about 335 series engines, you will see that about 20% of them are asking how to get the most bang for the buck power...the answers are there.
I wondered how long it would take to get the "there is no 400M" comment posted and MBBFord did it first.
Actually when I saw the title, I figured there would of been a couple of people that would of said that, and I was thinking it might of turned into the usual fight about what the M stands for.

I'm starting to rebuild my 400 "M" and I think the "M" stands for MONEY!!!
i got a 351m but you can usr the same stuff on your 400. i put a wieand intake (8010 i think) a energizer cam .539 lift. and recomended springs, a edelbrock 750cfm carb. and a .30 over bore. also if you have a auto a 2500 stall converter. and a set of headman headers. runs great and up to 6000 rpm.

So is you're edelbrock carb the mid performance/fuel econonmy one? Would you do anything over 750cfm's, or is that large enough in you're opinion?
