While stoped or driving, I get 'smoke' from my vents. If i put the heat on or put the fan on, it's like a smoke machine. I have to open all the windows, It an 88 w/302. The heater coil was replaced 18 months agos. Do I need to do it again or can it be something else?
Sounds to me like you have another bad heater core.My Mustang and Bronco both did this when the core went bad.At first I thought my car was on fire,it was that bad!If you have no heat, chances are-thats the problem.
I had a mechanic do it last time. I don't remember what he charged but I was going to try to fix it myself. How difficult is it? Also, I this that there is a way to bypass the coil. Does any one know how to do this?
Bypassing the heater core? Just pull the heater hoses where they go into the firewall get a short piece of adapter pipe to connect the hoses. Sometimes "Doorman" or "HELP!" product lines cover things like this. Talk to the guy in the auto parts store.
When I bought my '72 PU, someone had done it. BUT, I wanted my heater and defrost to work (safety first!), so I bought a new core from Kragen's ($30 or $35). I think it took me a few hours as I'd not done it before. BUT that was with a '72 F250 and no AC. (I also did it on a '96 Taurus and it took a few hours, too, but I cheated with that one by temorarily moving the ash tray support with a hacksaw.)
