Fuel Capacity

I noticed somthing pretty cool this weekend on a trip I took. I have the 30 gallon tank on my 06 w/ the 5.4, i was within 50 miles of empty it said but when i filled up it only took 24 gallons, so what that means is the tank still had 3 extra gallons that the fuel estimator does not take into consideration. Guess no worries on running out of gas...

That's what I thought a few years ago when I got a new Escape. I calculated how much gas I had left when my low fuel light came on and based on my fuel mileage, I knew how far I could go before empty. I found it's really embarrasing to be pushing a brand new (just introduced) bright red Escape down main street in the middle of the day to a gas station. When I filled it up, I found it didn't take the amount of gas specified in the book. The fuel pickup doesn't necessarily go to the bottom of the tank so you can't always get it all. The street wan't level and the gas probably ran to one side as I wasn't moving enough to slosh it around.

Being a slow learner, I did the same thing on my F-150 towing a travel trailer but it sloshed around enough for me to limp it into a gas station where it held slightly over the capacity of 26 gal..
