i have built up a 351m it is now bored 60 over and some times it over heats and somtimes not it has a new rad in it and a solid fan and shroud. i have been told that these engines can handle 60 over then i was told they cant can someone straighten me out
i'd check to see if it has the correct thermostat in it. a lot of times the parts guy will pull a Tstat for a W instead of the M, even at the Ford dealer parts counter!
some will say that .060" overbore is "too much and will cause overheating".
BS.
while it's possible that .060" is too much, it's not for the overheating issue, it's because of the core shift during the casting of the block, the cylinder bores are not centered in the metal allowed for them. one side is thicker than the other, sometimes so much that the overbore takes away almost all of the metal on the thin side. unless your block was sonic tested and verified to be good to go .060" over, only time will tell if yours is OK or not?
if you have a 160* Tstat, i highly doubt that you have the correct type in there because they don't make the correct Tstat in a 160* rating. your 160* tstat is allowing the hot coolant to recirculate back to the engine instead of going to the radiator to be cooled off. here's a link that explains it well, http://www.are.com.au/feat/techt/thermostat.htm
0.040 is the max overbore on the 351M. Core shift can also affect wall thickness. Thin walls will not provide enuf resistance to heat transfer and WILL cause overheating. Get the proper 190-195° Cooper-Standard RobertShaw Thermostat.
thanx for the input ill have to see about changing the stat, this also not a daily driver just for fun on the weekends so do you thank i could get by with the 60 over for now
A good thermostat, at least 185 deg. If the engine runs too cold, you will have increased cyl. wall wear. At 0.060 over, you can't afford another bore. A good high volume water pump, and high flow electric fan should do the trick. Weekend raunch'in heats 'em up.
