I just bought a 2002 Expedition EB and it has just a few minor things id like to get fixed. I've done some searching around and have found that most people with the rear amp/sub woofer thing have had problems with it. I haven't exactly found an answer to whats wrong with it. Also the CEL light is on and the OD light is flashing. The dealer tells me this light wasnt on until they ran it through the automated car wash thing. Took it and had the codes read, it said transmission but wouldnt give a code. The transmission runs fine and just had the fluid changed. When i got it one of the headlights was out, which i fixed, and the rear license plate lights both are out (which i just discovered).
I guess what im asking is what are somethings i can check on the subwoofer, and im not all that worried about the CEL light since its running fine, but is there a common problem i need to address?
I had a 01 navigator and nothing was coming from the subwoofer. Ended up selling it before it was fixed. Then bought 01 EB expedition. Subwoofer worked for 6 months then quit. I tried replacing the speaker and that didn't help. Thought it was the amp so I bought a used supposedly working subwoofer and swapped it out. Guess what, still no sound from subwoofer. I don't know what to try next other than change the main audio FM receiver.
Have had engine CEL also, code usually come up running too lean left and right banks. Have replaced the 02 sensor and that didn't help for too long.
I reset the computor one more time and it's been out for a while now, I guess the malfunction had something to do with the cold temps .
I used to have an '01 EB and shortly before I traded her in the amp gave out. Evidently it's fairly common. Remove the passenger side trim in the back and test the signal on both sides of the amp with a multimeter on AC setting. If your getting signal on the front and none on the back there's your problem.
Thanks, I swapped out the whole unit sub and amp, I did not check the amp but was told it was in good working condition when I bought it. I guess if I get the amp checked out that I just removed and it is good then I know I will have to look elsewhere.
I would be more concerned with the CEL. It's mostly likely on for a good and possibly costly reason. If you just got it from the dealer and if they're worth a crap, they'll diagnose and repair the CEL problem at no cost to you whether it has a warranty or not.
I have had a 1998 and a 2002 Eddie Bauer Expedition. I bougth both vehicles thru Carmax when they were each two years old. Both had non-working subwoofers when I bought them. Never had an issue with the '98 after a new subwoffer was installed. The '02 is another story.
The '02 had electrical problems around 2008-2009 timeframe. I couldn't keep the battery charged more than a day or so. I drive it everyday from Mon til Fri, but keep it in the garage over the weekend. Every Monday morning the battery was dead. First, I had the starter solenoid replaced. A little while later, I wound up replacing the alternator. Still had a dead battery issue every Monday morning. After some testing with a DMM, I noticed that the static current draw was a little over 2.25 Amps. I remembered that the subwoofer was out, so I pulled all three fuses related to the audio/entertainment system. I noticed that the static current draw dropped from over 2.25 Amps to something less than 0.75 Amps. I figured that it was probably a good thing to replace the power amp and subwoofer since I had been deprived of that sound for so long anyway. Afterwards everything seemed to work just fine. I replaced the battery in June 2009 for good measure and life was good . . . until this past weekend.
Saturday while returning home from an oil change at Wal-Mart, the electrical system crashed and left me stranded on the side of the road. Wound up charging the battery overnight and everything worked well until lunch time today. I watched the battery gauge needle drop to (I assume) zero as I drove it between buildings here where I work - less than 1/2 mile. The battery is at AutoZone being charged and load tested. If the battery is good, I plan to take it to my mechanic for an alternator check.
This is the first time I am actually hoping for a bad battery!
If you have had similar experiences, let's compare notes. Thanks!
