96 E4OD o/d cancel Switch
I'm new here! lol.
Well on the way back from the shore this morning the 96's E4OD o/d Cancel Switch light lit while cruising at 65 mph (it will downshift from o/d to 3rd when the light is lit). It will upshift when lit when I press the cancel button, but then will light up again and dnshift to 3rd.
It is NOT blinking and the tranny shifts ok in all ranges and from neutral to reverse.
It is ok if I shift into neutral then drive (O/D cancel lt is off); then it will light up again in drive after a minute or so (it will downshift from o/d to 3rd when the light is lit).
I searched here for a similar problem to no avail as well on the net.
Found only one related, but not similar fix @:

They say:.....'quote' -
"...Several different complaints concerning the overdrive cancel indicator may occur due to a faulty O/D cancel LED. At times the light may simply fail to light, flicker erratically, or glow very dim. Tapping the shift **** lightly may affect the operation of the LED, causing it tot work temporarily.
These complaints are usually due to a faulty O/D indicator LED. To replace the LED carefully pry the cap off the end of the shifter and pull the LED/switch out. Slide the new switch into position and snap the cap back on.
Note: Don’t confuse the above conditions with a steady flashing pattern of the O/D cancel light. A steady rhythmic flashing pattern indicates a malfunction has been detected by the computer.

Any suggestions? Could it be a malfunctions switch as cited above?
I'll give the switch a tap now........
Will be back to look here tonight.
And a great Memorial Weekend to all!
Now, no LED light shining when starting. Drive a few feet and it lights.
Try to shut LED off w/switch to no avail.
But stop, shift to Neutral, and LED goes off.
Shift to Drive and LED lights up...
Still, it doesn't Blink nor seem dim.
Anyway of testing the switch/LED assy.?
I took it out easily sooooo.
Fuse blown (yep, I checked myself but the 2 fuses (iaw owner's guide)I checked yesterday were A-OK.
Mike, our local mechanic said the wiring was ok, not shorted anywhere along the path from the tcil through the steering column. (It may be an intermittent short in the strg col or under dash)
Tranny still shifts great and the LED is off now. It will light when I cancel OD.
Also, all other items on the same fuse work...chime, etc.
So all is well today in jerseyland! .. for now..lol
