I have a 2000 7.3 that has 190,000 miles on it and runs fine, but has a very intermittent starting and stalling problem. When it happens, it turns over fine, but won't start. Normally I can turn off ignition (sometimes takes several attempts) and try again and it will start right up and run fine. twice in the past month it has stalled on me when approaching a red light. No sputtering or loss of power (just as if you killed the ignition), There again, it started right up after that. I'm guessing here, but it sounds like an electrical loose connection or relay failure to me....Any ideas from anyone would be most appreciated. I'm brand new to this site....Thanks, denbe
I second the CPS. Your symptoms are exactly what mine was doing. It may last another few months or few minutes. Easy fix and it pays to carry a spare in case.
I went through three in two months, but have been good two years since.
No rhyme or reason when they go .
From the miles, it sounds like it might be an early 99 like mine. Check my post #4 and #5 here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/592457-flashing-od-light.html to see what all I replaced (CPS, IDM..) only to find problem was UVC. I was told that Ford changed the spec on this plastic connector after all the initial problems with it. So if that's your problem, I suggest replacing both sides with updated version.
Edit: Oops, I just saw you're a 2000, so UVC is less likely.
I hope I'm not too late. Just saw your post this morning. The FORD dealership wants $198.00 for a CPS and Car Quest wants $223.00. You can get one (suggest 2) on ebay for $69.99 each shipped. Its a new FORD packaged part. Here is the link:
Thanks Carl..My wife works for an auto body shop and they were able to get one wholesale for 100. already a done deal. I think I may pick up an extra on ebay though. Appreciate the feedback
Don't know yet, it's still sitting on the kitchen counter. Waiting for the rain to stop before installing, probably in a day or two.....The kitchen counter seems to be working fine though..heh, heh. I have a feeling ya'll were right about the cps being the problem.
I wonder if those Ford badged CPS units on eBay are "counterfeit". I recently read an article in an automotive industry magazine saying counterfeit replacement parts are a serious $$$ loss of sales problem for the automakers.
