What is the normal price one would have to pay for a y-block? I have a 272 that I want to sell to a person but I do not have a clue what to ask him. It has the casting numbers ECG which I think would make it a 55-57 272. It is in a F600 truck and I believe it has a steel crank. Thanks for any info, Tom
If it is complete and recently overhauled or in excellent condition perhaps $500. If it needs major overhaul or parts $100 may be all its worth. I tried to give a complete one away for 6 months and had no takers, and sold it for $25. If the buyer is a friend make him a deal, but they aren't scarce or worth their weight in gold either. J
Thanks, I will just let it sit before I would take $25 for it. This engine is 51 years old and I do not know about your area but around here there are not many to be found. It is complete but probably needed rebuilding. Thanks again, Tom
In general most people who want an old Y-Block are those who need one for an original car or boat. It is a common misconception these motors do not perform and are boat anchors because they are fairly heavy and don't like high RPM's. Personally the sound of a Y with headers and glass packs sounds like no other! WIth the ease of buying "Crate Engines" that are ready to go there is very little demand for an old Y in anything other than what it may have been in when new. If you have the room put lots of oil in the cylinders and put it in storage. Someday you may want it yourself or get an offer you can't refuse.
I know I was offer a 292 with a automatic tranny, it supposdly turns over but for 5 years (atleast) has not ran it has no rebuild stamp and history is not known on the motor or even what it is from, howvere I will be buying it.
There is a sale coming up with a 57 Ford 1/2 ton if I buy that I'll pickup the motor.
