4.9 Enough power??

I want to put 31 or 32 inch tires on my 92, 4.9 5 speed with a 3.08 rear end. In the summer I will have to tow a car that can weigh up to 5000lbs trailer included. I just got the truck and it has stock tires on it. So, do you guys think this truck would have enough in it to pull a heavy car with a 3.08 rear end and 32 inch tires? thanks

The 3:08 rears will be pushing your truck itself. The 300-6 has good low end but having hi gears isn't going to help. It will tow it but you probably will spend some in 3rd and 4th gear depending on you area. (if its flat) Good luck

No. You're asking the truck to pull twice it's weight. 3:08 gears would be fine in a 3500lb car with a 3sp auto tranny and 26" tires. But it's all wrong for something that has to work for a living, you need 4:10 gears minimum to pull that load with 32" tires. Trying to do it otherwise will drastically shorten the life of your clutch and transmission.

I would say that you would not enjoy a towing experience with the set up that you are proposing. Your 3.08 rear gear set is woefully inadequate to tow pretty much anything over a ton with any kind of authority. The bigger tires that you want to run will only make the matters worse. The 4.9 has lots of grunt if you set it up properly. Unfortunately, with your set up, I can easily see a fried trans. or motor coming at you really quickly.

Sorry I can't be really positive for you. I tow a 5,000 lb. RV with my 5.0, 3.55, E4OD and stock tires and it is, to say the least, a full pull. It's not a rig that I would tow any further than the 35 miles to the lake unless I geared the rear end to a 4.11.

Cheers!

Mike
