Brake upgrades for 2003?

I am due for some break work and with the towing that I do (towing my pop-up camper, approx 3000lbs) I am wondering what is available in the line of brake upgrades for my ranger, can I increase size? Are there better brands/products than stock, if so what do folks have good/bad experiences with? I have a 2003 FX4 LII 4X4, 4.0L.

Anyone have any experience here? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I just read an article on brake upgrades (tested on a Mazda Miata without abs) it seems that steel braided lines is 1 of the best upgrades to start with. This stops the expanding you get with the stock rubber lines and gives you a more solid feel. The slotted rotors and pad upgrade gave the Miata a 30 foot shorter stopping distance.

If your rig doesn't have a good set of trailer brakes, maybe that would be a more cost effective consideration.

There's a few companies that offer upgraded brake systems, there's Baer, they offer new larger drilled and slotted rotors and calipers, there's power slot, there's SSBC and BREMBO, or just upgradeing your pads can help, like going to a set of Hawk HPS performane brake pads. You can view all these brake options at

I see that there are several vendors that make drilled and slotted rotors, how much of a good/bad thing is that? ...and which is better, drilled or slotted?

I will definately be looking into trailer brakes as well, thanks for the suggestion.

Also, is any custom work needed to fit larger rotors?
