Ok guys, I've heard all the talk about the Bama chip-tuner, sounds great. Now my question, I have a 94 4.0L, no Bama for me right? What can I get for a 94? What do you others use with the old EEC-IV system?
No, bama dosen't make a programer for the non OBD II computers, but I just heard a guy on another forum that said he believed Doug makes a chip for the earlier computers. You can contact Doug at www.bama chips.com.
Hey Zach!! Wanting to know what I find out? Hoping there is something for our 94's with 4.0L's? Well, your a pretty good guy so I'll post it if I find something out. LOL
Yeah. After getting a tuner for the Silverado and enjoying the difference it made, I briefly looked for one for the Ranger, but didn't turn anything up, truck got broken into, so the money had to go elsewhere.
Ok guys, this is what I found out from Doug at BamaChips.
This is directly from the E-mail he sent me:
Unfortunately I can't do a whole lot with the EEC4 Ranger's if anything at
all. You can't adjust any of the transmission functions on these, or at
least the ones I've done. You can pick up some power from the better spark
and fuel curves but only when using 93. Using 87 you could still see some
gains but it may be limited. Most of the EEC4 tuning I've done has been for
very performance oriented customers with aftermarket cams, ported heads,
nitrous and so on.
The EEC4 Ranger's and Explorer's can only be chipped as they cannot be
reflashed, it wasn't until EEC5 that the PCM's became reprogrammable.
The BIG problem on the ECC4 Explorer's and Ranger's is the lack of support
for the PCM calibration codes. I have done about 20 over the last few
months. Most of the codes I have or had to send the PCM's to SCT for them to
download but if I have to request the code then it can take a while for SCT
to request it from Ford and for them to get it in. The last calibration code
request I did took two months, I've put in for another here recently and I'm
still waiting.
EEC4 is like comparing Windows 3.1 to Window's 2000, yes it can be used and
work well but the new operating system is much better. They can be upgraded
and used, heck I've got one guy making 284rwhp and 450rwtq from a OHV 4.0 in
a 93' Ranger, but it's the wait that can kill ya.
Yeah, thats got to be a lot of mods and $$$. Would make you think a 5.0L may be a cheaper and more powerful route to take.
I don't think I've seen 93 octane around here in awhile though, but we do have a performance shop that sells racing fuel here in town (105+ I think) LOL
I too hope we can find a chip. When I get my Splash running I would like it to put some imports in their place (behind me)!!
If anybody reads this thread and has tried any chips for the EEC-IV computers please let us know what they are, where you got them, and how you like them.
I think it would be awesome to build a 4.0, it's lighter than a 5.0 and original. Morana v6 racing has that 4.5 stroker kit for the 4.0 ohv. That should produce some good torque.
