Hi,
I have an 89 F250 4x4 with a 460. While I was out plowing this evening, I seem to have sprung a leak in my PS system (haven't had a chance to look into wher it is leaking yet). When the pump started to whine, I shut the truck down immediately. I decided to fill the reservoir and get the truck home ASAP. When I started the truck up the steering extremely hard to turn but the pump was no longer whining. I got the truck home and still no whining but still extremely hard to turn.
Any thoughts? Is the pump shot or is it the steering box?
Thanks!!
Dave
The hard turning is probably air in the system that you need to bleed it out. With the motor running cycle the wheel lock to lock several times, check fluid and repeat. If it's really hard to turn, put it up on jack stands.
If the leak is where the pitman arm attaches to the sector shaft of the power steering gear box you need to replace the steering gear lower pitman shaft seal.
Costs about $17.00.
I took a quick look this morning and from the top side everything looks pretty dry. I couldn't gete great look from the bottom but I suspect it might be the pitman shaft seal or the return line might have rusted through somewhere.
